Pune Traffic Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving: 5,256 Cases Registered This Year

As the city gears up to bid adieu to the outgoing year and welcome the new one, the Pune Traffic Police have intensified their drive against drunk driving. In a stern warning, the police have cautioned drivers against driving under the influence of alcohol, stating that stringent action will be taken against offenders.

This year, the traffic police have registered 5,256 cases against drunk drivers, with October witnessing the highest number of cases at 1,433. The police have been using breath analyzers with disposable pipes to detect drunk drivers, a practice that was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in December 2023.

“We urge drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. We are conducting special drives against drunk driving at over 30 locations in the city. If you are found guilty, we will take strict action against you,” said Amol Zende, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic.

The police have also warned that while traffic rule violators are fined through e-challans, drunk driving cases are directly taken to court. With the New Year’s Eve celebrations around the corner, the police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure public safety.
