Pune Municipal Corporation Prepares to Combat HMPV
Following the outbreak of HMPV in China and its subsequent entry into India, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken proactive measures to tackle the virus. Although no HMPV cases have been reported within the PMC limits, the corporation is leaving no stone unturned to ensure preparedness.
Isolation Facility Set Up
A dedicated isolation ward with 50 beds has been established at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital. The ward includes five intensive care unit (ICU) beds. In case of an outbreak, the hospital has provisions for 350 isolation beds. Additionally, the PMC plans to utilize private hospitals to provide up to 3,500 isolation beds.
Symptoms and Treatment
HMPV symptoms are similar to those of the flu, including cough, cold, and fever. The infection is self-limiting, meaning it can resolve on its own within three to five days. However, individuals with weakened immune systems may be at risk of developing pneumonia. According to Dr. Neena Boerhade, Health Officer, PMC, treatment for HMPV is similar to that for flu, and necessary medications are available .
