Mother-in-law and Sister-in-law Get Life Imprisonment for Burning Daughter-in-law Over Cooking Dispute

Pune: In a verdict convicting the mother-in-law and sister-in-law who set the daughter-in-law on fire, they have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Additional Sessions Judge Prabhakar Jadhav delivered the verdict in this case.

The convicted are Mamata Vijay Chavan (age 48, from Shramik Nagar, Mangalwar Peth) and Rita, also known as Gauri Santosh Valmike (age 34, from Jayjawan Nagar).

Following a dispute over cooking, the mother-in-law Mamata and the sister-in-law Rita verbally abused and doused the daughter-in-law, Deepali Amit Chavan (age 28), with Rokel and set her on fire. This incident occurred on November 1, 2023. Due to severe burns, Deepali was admitted to the hospital by her husband Amit. At the Faras Khana Police Station, Assistant Inspector Parashuram Shinde recorded her statement in the presence of medical experts at the hospital. Owing to the extent of her burns, Deepali succumbed to her injuries and died in the hospital on November 3.

Police registered a case at the Faras Khana Police Station and arrested the mother-in-law Mamata and sister-in-law Rita. On the government’s side, Additional Government Lawyer Namdev Taralgatti presented the case, and eight witnesses testified. Based on the evidence and the pre-trial death of the victim, Additional Sessions Judge Prabhakar Jadhav sentenced the accused mother-in-law and sister-in-law to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000.
