Mandatory Helmet Rule for Two-Wheeler Riders and Pillion Riders in Maharashtra

In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Maharashtra government has made it compulsory for both two-wheeler riders and pillion riders to wear helmets. This decision comes after a notable increase in accidents and fatalities involving two-wheelers over the past five years.

According to the new rule, both riders and pillion riders must wear helmets, and failure to comply will result in separate penalties for each. The e-challan system will be updated to accommodate this change, with two new categories: “Driver” for the rider and “Pillion” for the passenger.

This move aims to reduce the number of accidents, deaths, and injuries involving two-wheelers. The state government has instructed police officials to strictly enforce the Motor Vehicles Act, ensuring that both riders and pillion riders wear helmet.

In line with the Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee guidelines, the Maharashtra government has emphasized the importance of wearing helmets for all two-wheeler users. This decision is expected to significantly improve road safety in the state.
