A tragic accident occurred in Wagholi, Pune, on December 23, 2024, when a drunk dump truck driver ran over nine people sleeping on the footpath, killing three, including two children, and injuring six others.

The incident happened around 1 am near Wagholi Chowk, outside the Wagholi police station. The driver, Gajanan Shankar Totare (26), was arrested and charged with culpable homicide. He was found to be intoxicated during a medical examination.

The victims were laborers from Amravati who had arrived in Pune on Sunday night for work. They were sleeping on the footpath when the dump truck, MH 12 VF 0437, lost control and ran them over.

The injured were taken to Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital for primary treatment and later shifted to Sassoon Hospital for further treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also sent to Sassoon Hospital.

The police are investigating the incident, which has caused widespread concern in the Wagholi area.
